Philip Morris International (PMI) is transforming the tobacco industry to create a smoke-free future and eventually replacing cigarettes with smoke-free products to benefit adults, companies and their shareholders in society as a whole that should continue to smoke. PMI is a leading international tobacco company that manufactures and sells cigarettes and smokeless products, related electronic equipment and accessories, and other nicotine-containing products in markets outside the United States.
In recent years, PMI has laid the foundation for achieving its vision of replacing cigarettes with less scientifically harmful alternatives. The company is now designing the organization to accelerate this ambitious transformation and ensure its sustainability by calling for new skills, reducing duplication of work, and providing effective global support to its subsidiaries.
The tobacco company Philip Morris International (PMI) has unveiled plans to cut jobs at its sites in Lausanne and Neuchâtel. It is expected to affect approximately 265 positions. About 60% of these positions can be transferred to other locations, such as Lisbon, London, and Krakow.
The company said if the planned restructuring continues, it has opened formal processes in both cantons and those affected will be informed between now and the end of March 2020.
In accordance with legal obligations and high standards for PMI management employee departures, the company also initiated a social discussion for affected employees with the aim of providing financial compensation beyond market practice. , And full support for the transition and employability of people leaving the company, including job search assistance, coaching, and counseling.
The company said its restructuring plans are part of its strategy to focus on cigarette alternatives, such as IQOS, a heated tobacco product.
In addition, PMI has issued a version of the IQOS Platform 1 device and its consumables authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration to Altria Group, Inc., which has been sold in the United States.
The company describes IQOS as the best alternative to the cigarette and claims it is less dangerous than cigarettes. However, such claims are controversial.
Part of the problem is that most of the testing has been done on animals rather than humans and most research has been done by the tobacco industry, which has a well-established history of public deception.
Two studies done in 2018 and 2019 did not show relevant reductions of potential harm in regard to inflammation and lung function when shifting from cigarettes to heated tobacco alternatives. This could be linked to the continual inhalation of nicotine and the remaining toxicants, according to the authors. Another study on rats concluded that IQOS use does not necessarily avoid the adverse cardiovascular effects of smoking cigarettes.
PMI is building the future with a new smoke-free product that, while not without risks, is a better choice than continuing to smoke.
With its multidisciplinary product development capabilities, advanced facilities and scientific evidence, PMI aim to ensure that its smokeless products meet the preferences and strict regulatory requirements of adult consumers. PMI’s IQOS smokeless product portfolio includes products that heat tobacco rather than burn it (non-burning) and electronics that contain nicotine. As of September 30, 2019, PMI estimates that approximately 8.8 million adult smokers worldwide have stopped smoking and switched to PMI’s “non-burning heat” products. The IQOS brand can be sold in major cities or 51 markets across the country.
