Last Wednesday, the Michigan Senate approved a six-bill package. After the implementation of bills, an 18% tax will be required on the liquid nicotine solution used in electronic cigarettes. And the bill allows the individuals’ sale of flavored vaping products.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, attempted to make Michigan the first state in the nation that bans flavored vaping products to reduce the number of young vape users last year. However, the ban eventually was suspended by the courts after businesses filed a legal challenge.
And with the support of the Republican-controlled Senate, a new legislative package of vaping products will set up an enforcement and licensing system for vaping shops.
New bills will also change the age requirement for purchasing both tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21. President Donald Trump already instituted a federal change to raise the legal age to 21 across the country in the early time.
Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, said the bill “…is regulated. It’s enforced.”
Ananich is one of the sponsors of this package bills. He said this package aimed to resolve the lack of specific federal and state policy on vaping in Michigan. And the new legislation will not affect the sales of marijuana vaping products, which plans to set the tax rate at 24% at the beginning, but finally, rating to 18% before the vote.
At present, there is no specific tax system for vaping productions. According to Ananich, he said lawmakers were also working with industry members on the proposals. Negotiations on the legislation are still going on and now move to the Michigan House for further consideration.
But the package is opposed by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.
Andrew Schepers, director of government relations in Michigan for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said:
“We cannot leave Michigan’s kids vulnerable to the tobacco industry, which aims to hook Michigan children into a lifetime of addiction to tobacco.”
