Chinese President Xi Jinping said last week that China must curb drug-related problems and make unswerving efforts to maintain people’s lives, health and safety, and social stability to win the war on drugs.
To solve the problems of transnational drug smuggling, new drugs, and drug-related cybercrime, Comrade Xi Jinping urged local governments to go all out to fight the drug war, improve anti-drug mechanisms, and deepen international cooperation.
At a meeting held last week, Xi Jinping said that he commended organizations and individuals who stood out in the national anti-drug work.
This commendation will occur before the International Anti-Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Day on June 26 every year.
Chinese State Councilor Zhao Kezhi, also the director of the National Drug Control Commission, read Xi Jinping’s instructions at the meeting and called on local governments to make more significant efforts to ensure people’s new victory in the fight against drugs.
Since 2015, 100 organizations and 100 people who have made the conference has commended significant contributions to the fight against drugs.
China’s achievements in combating drugs
According to data released by Chinese narcotics control authorities ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, in the past five years, China has achieved remarkable results in combating drugs, with 638,000 drug crimes cracked, 32,000 drug gangs arrested and 780,000 suspects detained. People seized more than 400 tons of various drugs.
Domestic drug production has decreased significantly, accounting for less than 20% of seized drugs.
In the past five years, China has detected 4.27 million drug addicts and sent 1.56 million of them to mandatory detoxification.
As of the end of 2019, 38,000 community rehabilitation institutions were established in China, serving more than 480,000 people.
