In the previous article CBD Extraction Process Explained – Extraction, Purification, Final Processing, Vapebiz mentioned the way to extract CBD, and also introduced the only four companies in China that have CBD licenses, including Hankang Bio, Hansu Bio, Hempson Bio, and BiouNIO Bio
For these four companies, consumers of the CBD are basically unfamiliar if they are not practitioners in the relevant supply chain. Although industrial cannabis companies have been favored by a large number of investors in the European and American regions because of the passing of the Farm Bill, in China, “Cannabis”(Marijuana) is still a sensitive term, so the public does not know the actual value of CBD companies in China.
At present, the four companies that have obtained the license in China are each with their own advantages. At the same time, the CBD patents of these companies have also been disclosed. Let us briefly introduce the technical processes and extraction characteristics of each company.
Hankang (Yunnan) Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
According to JINKE, Hankang (Yunnan) Biotechnology Co., Ltd. currently uses the fully enclosed essential oil extraction method, and Hankang Biotech’s extraction technology patent application is the earliest and has been authorized.
The patent application for “a method for extracting industrial hemp essential oil rich in cannabidiol and its extraction equipment” was filed on October 24, 2014, and the patent number is CN201410574240. It is mainly for the protection of CBD extraction methods and extraction equipment. The product is industrial hemp essential oil rich in CBD. The raw material for extraction is industrial hemp flower, which is soaked and extracted with an organic solvent, and then purified by a silica gel column, and the purified product is subjected to evaporation, concentration, and leaching to obtain a finished product of hemp essential oil.
The method overcomes the disadvantages of low efficiency, large consumption and inconvenient scale production in the traditional process, and the semi-finished product containing tetrahydrocannabinol in the processing is untouched and segregated and is legal, safe, efficient, simple in process, high in product purity. The active ingredient is complete and the cost is low.
Currently, this patent is still valid, and the announcement date is January 14, 2015.
Yunnan Hansu Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
Then introduce Yunnan Hansu Biotechnology Co., Ltd. Established on December 22, 2015, the company mainly engages in: sales; development and application of biotechnology; domestic trade, material supply and marketing; import and export of goods and technology. The company is also the first industrial hemp biological extraction and separation base in China.
At present, Hansu Bio is using a low-toxic environmental extraction method. The patented technology is in the process of actual examination in China and has applied for PCT patents. According to the announcement of Meilleure Health International, Hansu Bio’s patent has recently been authorized in the United States, but the authorized version has not been announced.
This is the first international medical CBD extraction patent obtained by a Chinese company, which indicates that Chinese manufacturers have gained international recognition in technology and industry which require the most purity of CBD. It is also another milestone for China’s cannabis industry after its first achieved the industrialized extraction of high-purity CBD in the world.
According to the information of Qixinbao, Hansu Bio has applied for 16 patents in China, of which up to 13 are utility model patents related to CBD extraction. The other three are related to the CBD, and the invention of the new extraction technology is announced.
It is worth noting that one of the inventions was published, patent number CN106831353A, which made Yunnan Hansu the first to obtain the qualification of DMF-related Chinese manufacturers. It is understood that the patent name is “METHOD FOR EXTRACTION CANNABIDIOL FROM CANNABIS”, the inventors are Zhang Ke, Tan Wei, Gao Weibo and Chang Tanran. The application is published on June 13, 2017, and is the first US-approved cannabinoid extraction patent.
Hansu Bio-CBD extraction technology is to pulverize and dry the extracted parts of cannabis to obtain the medicinal material powder, and then extract with 30 to 100% (V/V) ethanol; the protection range covers three methods of organic solvent extraction. After the extraction, it was dissolved with water and ethanol and further purified by MCI resin column chromatography.
The method comprises the steps of pulverizing and drying the extracted part of the cannabis to obtain a medicinal material powder; extracting the medicinal material powder with 30-100% (V/V) ethanol; concentrating the extract to obtain the concrete; Performing water sedimentation, removing impurities to obtain water sedimentation solution; centrifuging the water sedimentation liquid and adding 10-100% (V/V) ethanol to the obtained precipitate, dissolving the alcohol solution of the precipitate; and performing the alcohol solution of the precipitate on the column Chromatography; Concentration column chromatography, elution of the obtained eluate, adding ethanol to supersaturate to obtain crystals; adding crystals to purified water or ethanol to obtain the initial product; mixing the initial product with purified water, drying That’s it. The invention only uses highly safe ethanol as a solvent, which not only improves the purity of the cannabidiol in the finished product, but also removes the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol, improves the product safety, and is suitable for industrial production.
The purified eluted sample is supersaturated crystallized, and the crystallized product is added to purified water or ethanol to obtain a preliminary product; the preliminary product is mixed with purified water and dried to obtain pure cannabidiol. According to the data of the examples in the patent, the extraction rate of the CBD extracted by the method is above 96%, the extraction purity is ≥95% (HPLC method), and the THC residual content is ≤0.1% (HPLC method).
The biggest feature of Hansu Bio-extraction Technology is that it uses ethanol to extract the whole process while ensuring the extraction rate and purity, avoiding the toxicity of petroleum ether and organic solvent residues, and ensuring the safety of the product.
Yunnan Hempson Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
Yunnan Hempson Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in biotechnology. It is a well-known enterprise of Yunnan Zhaotong Bio-instrument. Compared with Hankang and Hansu, it has a late entry into the industrial hemp field, but the company has a background in medical equipment and medical advantage.
The Hempson bio mainly adopts the health-care grade extraction method, and the patents for extraction are also in the domestic trial.
According to the IPR announcement, most of Hempson Bio’s patents belong to the two categories of invention authorization and invention publication. Among them, the preparation methods and equipment patents of medicines are the main ones. It is quite rare to extract CBD practical patents.
The main process described in the patent includes drying and pulverizing industrial hemp leaves, followed by supercritical carbon dioxide technology for extraction, in order to improve extraction efficiency, the residue is subjected to secondary extraction.
The extract precipitates the CBD precipitate by throttling expansion, and the precipitate is dissolved in an organic solvent and then homogeneously filled to obtain a cannabidiol product. The chromatographic purification step was not used in the extraction process.
The data in the examples show that the method has a CBD extraction rate of up to 90%, and the obtained product has a purity of about 10 to 30%, in addition to 50 to 60% of unsaturated fatty acids and 9 to 11%. Terpenoids. This product is mainly aimed at the pharmaceutical market.
Kunming BiouNIO Biotech Co., Ltd.
Finally, Kunming BiouNIO Biotech Co., Ltd. is a company specializing in the extraction, research and development, production and sales of industrial hemp-derived products. It also a versatile company covers agriculture research and development, application, promotion and technical consultation of biotechnology and technology.
By comparing the above three companies, it should be regarded as market pioneers. According to the information of Qixinbao, there is only one patent for the CBD of BiouNIO, which is a preparation method of cannabidiol (CN108640820A), and it is still under review.
This patent belongs to the type of invention publication and is not a utility patent.
According to reports, the technical process mainly includes pulverizing and drying the extraction part and extracting by organic solvent reflux extraction technology. The extract is concentrated and precipitated, filtered to evaporate the solvent, and heated to obtain CBD enrichment, and then purified by silica gel column.
The purified solution was subjected to rotary evaporation to remove the solvent, and then washed and recrystallized to obtain cannabinol. The main feature of this technology is the use of heated distillation of the extract to obtain CBD enrichment prior to chromatographic column purification.
Although the patent shows beneficial environmental pollution reduction, streamlined process flow, increased productivity, and reduced investment costs. However, the author believes that the invention patent of BiouNIO Bio may be difficult to pass because the specific details are insufficient, and Hansu Bio is more comprehensive in this respect. Therefore, even if BaiouNIO has a license, it is better for it to develop technical cooperation in the future.
The Huge Potential of China’s Hemp Industry
According to the content of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in cannabis, cannabis is classified into different types.
Industrial hemp contains less than 0.3% THC. The value of industrial hemp in papermaking, textile, building materials, industrial oil, functional health food, cosmetics, medicine, and other industries has been gradually explored. It is a new and distinctive bio-industry in recent years, and the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, and other countries gradually opened up for the proper use of industrial hemp.
In 2017, the global industrial hemp market will be approximately US$3.9 billion, and it is expected to reach US$10.6 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of over 13%. The CBD in industrial hemp has strong medicinal value. In 2020, the market size of the US CBD is expected to reach 2.1 billion US dollars, of which 450 million US dollars are derived from CBD extraction.
China is one of the major producers of industrial hemp. In 2016, China’s industrial hemp planted an area of about 80 km² (the same period in the United States, 60 km²). China is also the world’s largest producer of industrial hemp fiber and seeds.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, 309 of the 606 patent applications for cannabis in the world in 2017 were from China. In 2010, Yunnan Province issued the Yunnan Provincial Government Order Document to take the lead in clarifying the legalization of industrial hemp.
However, unfortunately, due to many policy factors, the current industrial hemp cultivation and processing licenses in China are still subject to examination and approval by the public security organs, and there are detailed regulations on registered capital and personnel qualifications. Therefore, companies that obtain industrial hemp extraction licenses are very scarce.
