“School districts of all sizes are standing up for their student communities. These 25 school districts, which serve over 1.134 million students across California, are part of a statewide movement to hold JUUL accountable for the expenditure of public and taxpayer resources required to respond to the vaping crisis,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, John Fiske. “This epidemic is causing major health issues for juveniles and enormous financial strain for school districts. JUUL must step up and take ownership for their role in this crisis.”

“We’ve spent our careers standing up against companies like JUUL that think they can take advantage of the most vulnerable in our society without consequence,” said Panish Shea & Boyle LLP Partner Rahul Ravipudi. “Advocating for the safety and wellness of our children is priority number one and we’re proud to stand beside these Districts in championing that mission. We’re ready to see this fight through until justice is served.”

In response to the prevalence of e-cigarettes and the disruption of the normal operation of schools, these lawsuits sought e-cigarette bans and economic remedies, as well as the promotion of universal e-cigarette hazard education programs.
The development of JUUL in recent years:

Since entering the market in 2015, JUUL has dominated the e-cigarette industry and has controlled over 70% of the market. Over a million JUUL e-cigarettes were sold between 2015 and 2017. In fact, the e-cigarette category grew 97 percent to $1.96 billion between June 2017 and June 2018 alone.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the content of e-cigarettes in e-cigarettes reached the highest level of all records in 44 years in 2018. From 2017 to 2018, the number of youth e-cigarette users increased by 1.5 million. JUUL’s marketing strategy not only caused more and more addicted young consumers but also led to the increasingly prominent health problems of a wide range of users.
